The Claddagh Legend has it that the Claddagh symbol was designed by a sailor from Galway, Richard Joyce. He was kidnapped by pirates and held off the coast of Africa. During this time he learned the goldsmiths art and fashioned a ring that he hoped he would be able to present to his one true love back in Ireland. After 7 years of captivity, he gained his release and returned to Galway where he she was still waiting for him and the ring was used as their wedding band. Since then the Claddagh ring has been worn as a wedding ring. The rings can be worn as a sign of engagement, marriage or friendship. The meaning of the ring differs depending on how the wearer wears the ring: Engagement - If the ring is placed on the 3rd finger on the left hand with the heart pointing outwards. Married - Again the ring is worn on the 3rd finger of the left hand with the heart pointing inwards. Friendship - The ring is worn on any finger of the right hand.
